Travel insurance FAQs (because even savvy travellers have those ‘wait, what?’ moments)

When should I buy travel insurance?

It’s smart to buy travel insurance as soon as you book your trip. Why? Because this means you might be eligible for more financial protection.

If you buy your policy before you start your trip, and you have cancellation cover, you may be able to claim for rearrangements and cancellations that happen because of out-of-the-blue incidents outside your control.

Can I cancel my Blue travel insurance policy after I’ve bought it?

Blue Insurance policies have a 21-day cooling-off period. You can cancel your policy within this time as long as you haven’t started your trip yet, have not made a claim, and don't intend to make a claim.

Please read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for more about this.

How long do I have to lodge a Blue Insurance claim?

If something goes wrong during your travels, it’s best to let us know ASAP.

However, you can make a claim anytime within 60 days of the return date shown on your Certificate of Insurance.

All you need to do is fill out an online claim form or PDF claim form.

If you’re worried you might miss the 60-day deadline because you’re waiting for or missing documentation, contact our claims team on 1300 481 596.

If you have more questions about making a claim, contact our claims team on 1300 481 596.

Does Blue Insurance have cover for existing medical conditions?

Our travel insurance plans include automatic cover for some existing medical conditions. These medical conditions, as well as the conditions you must meet for cover, are listed in our Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).

If you have one or more existing medical conditions that are not on this list or you don't meet the listed cover conditions, you’ll need to do an online medical assessment (for all your medical conditions) when getting your travel insurance quote. You can easily declare all your medical conditions during this medical assessment so we can quickly tell you if we can cover them.

Once you finish the assessment, you may be asked to pay an extra premium to include the cover in your policy. Some conditions can be included for no additional premium.

If you have questions about any of this, please contact our friendly customer service team on 1300 481 596 - they'll be happy to answer your questions.

Does Blue Insurance have cover for COVID-19?

Our international plans and domestic plan all automatically include some COVID-19 cover, as long as you meet the conditions listed in the PDS. Some exclusions apply.

To understand more about our COVID-19 benefits, please read the PDS.

I’ve never heard of Blue Insurance – are you new?

Kind of. We’re new to Australia, but we’ve been looking after Ireland and UK travellers for decades. (Since 2003 to be precise…) Check out our About Us page for our full backstory (and to take a snoop at our trophy cabinet).

We’re also backed by Zurich – Zurich Insurance is our parent company and Zurich Australia our underwriter – so you know we at Blue can take care of you.
